背景知识：

冰壶（Curling）又称为「冰上溜石」，有时也称为「冰球」，但容易与冰上曲棍球(Ice Hockey)混淆。冰壶是一项队制的冬季运动会项目，冰壶所有的「壶」称为「石壶」，运动员需要把对方的「石壶」击走，并把己队的「石壶」留在比赛场地的圆心中。

冰壶起源于16世纪的苏格兰，当时人们会于冬天时在冰冻的池塘湿地上玩一种推石球游戏。最早的冰壶在1511年的苏格兰首次出现比赛，后来在17世纪之时，当时比赛所用的石头被加上一个手把，成了现代冰壶的最初外形。

18世纪时期，冰壶游戏由在英国军队传至北美洲，并且渐渐的普及起来。之后在20世纪，室内运动场出现，冰壶的发展更进一步。1966年，国际冰上石壶总会在英国成立，这种在冰上推石壶到目标地的游戏在1980年成为了奥运上的一个认可体育运动，及后在长野冬季奥运中，男、女子的冰壶赛首度成为了正式的比赛项目。

比赛上所用的「石壶」必须是为一个由花岗岩打磨而成，并加上光油的圆球，它的球身稍呈扁状，而且有柄，直径29厘米、重量为42磅 ，即19.1公斤左右。比赛时共有5个运动员，一个为后备球员，其余的4个分别是「主力」(Lead)、「第二人」(Second)、「第三人」(Third)以及最重要的「队长」(Skip)。

运动员要在长146英呎 (44.5米)，宽度15英呎7吋4，即75米的比赛场地中，把「石壶」推向场中「大本营」(House)的圆心(Tee)。当中，大本营直径12英吋，圆心半径 0.15米，「石壶」要滑行至「大本营」才有机会得到分数。 在赛事中，每队要派上4位运动员参赛，4位运动员在一局之中，各要两次把「石壶」推向圆心范围，在一局之尾中，「石壶」位置比对手距离中心点最近的可得到1分。而一场冰壶比赛合共10局，最后总分高的一方获胜。

在其中一位运动员要穿上比赛专用的鞋，从起点线中把「石壶」推出时，其它的两位运动员要在「石壶」前以由鬃毛或麦秆制成刷子协助「石壶」滑动，以令「石壶」到达圆心之内。而两位以刷子协助「石壶」滑动的运动员在到了栏线 (Hog line)上，让要让「石壶」自行滑行。
